The Chancellor stuck to his promise of ending the furlough scheme, replacing it with the UK equivalent of Germany’s Kurzarbeit. To qualify, staff will need to work at least 33% of their regular hours. Their remaining pay will be topped up by their employer and another third by the government. Whilst this policy has been generally well received it is by no means as generous as the existing furlough scheme. As one commentator in the Sunday Times wrote “The measures let the tyres down on an economy not yet motoring”.
