The fallout from the pandemic which originated in the city of Wuhan, and the handling of the virus by the Chinese authorities has come under intense scrutiny from governments around the world. It is rumoured that the UK government is reappraising its commitment to allow Huawei, a Chinese tech giant to help develop the UK’s development of the 5G network. Boris Johnson unveiled the change in foreign policy designed to end reliance on Beijing at a meeting of his National Security council last week, but it has exposed a rift within his cabinet. Chancellor Rishi Sunak warned that “putting up an economic wall” risked hampering Britain’s GDP and slowing economic recovery.
There is no doubt that our relationship with China will be watched closely by our western allies, and that any decision by the UK government will have lasting effects .
